A Break From the Normal

Good afternoon!

I am finally finished with midterms, and I am very relieved! I did not realize how stressed I was until now on fall break! I have a couple of classes I have to go to before my week is done, but I am going to the Vincent Van Gogh Immersive Experience this weekend, and I am ecstatic. Last weekend, my little sister came home from college, and it was so relieving to see her! I will include some pictures of her in this post!

This week, I decided to take a break from our friendship/relationship talk and give a little reminder on self-care! There is a reason I included “shenanigans” in the title because I knew that we would all need a break from heavy-set psychology at some point. Today, I decided I should give my own routine to show that I am not perfect, and this will hopefully give you some helpful suggestions.

1. Sleep – I am not the best with taking care of my sleep, but I usually am fully rested when I get 8 hours of sleep. However, because of Chick-fil-A, I rarely get home before 10pm at night, I seldom get those 8 hours because I do my best to get up at 7am to get homework and working out done. If I have time, I make sure to get a nap, but I always try to get exactly an hour and a half amount of sleep if I take a nap. This has proven to make you the most well-rested because you are fully going through your REM cycle! Recently, I have been using this free sleep app called, “Sleep Cycle.” I completely recommend because this shows if you sleep-talk, snore, and it also keeps track of when you fall asleep and how much. It has really helped me! However, I know all you fancy people have an apple watch do not have to worry about this, hah!

2. Hair – We ALL know that I have some crazy hair, lol! I actually plan to get a “hair” section on this website at some point! I am a little too busy at the moment, but I hope to have it set up during the winter break! I will not tell you anymore, but it will be a lot of fun!

Anyways, I have been doing a new hair routine that has been interesting. One problem I have is that my hair takes FOREVER to dry. When I take a shower and co-wash it in the morning, it takes ALL day to dry. Recently, I have been trying a shower late at night and putting my hair styling cream in it before I sleep. I am not sure if this is completely healthy because I have read that going to sleep with your hair wet is not the greatest idea. However, it has been working for me so far.

Here are some products that I use and love! Just a warning, I have some pretty tight curls. I have 3C-3D curls, so if you are looking at this and you have looser curls, I recommend looking at brands like Shea Moisture. Also, I am still learning how to take care of my hair myself, so I am certainly not an expert.

- Hair-styling cream – Texture ID! I love this brand because it goes very well with my curls, and it keeps it together very well.

- Co-Wash – I generally use As I Am because it leaves my curls nice and silky afterwards, and no, it does not use Sulfides!

- Hair mask – I have been loving the Texture ID mask! It leaves my hair feeling healthy and moisturized.

- Shampoo – I only shampoo my hair once a month because my hair is so dry, but I also use Texture ID! I used to use general shampoo for straight/wavy hair, and that was a big mistake. Even if you rarely wash your hair, if you have curly hair like me, please use texture-focused shampoo!

- Brush – ALWAYS use a comb. I used to use a brush when I was small and my mom did not know what to do, and that ruined my hair as a child. I usually comb my hair in the shower, and that is what I usually recommend.

3. Skincare – Finally, skincare! I love skincare, and as I have gotten older, I have been loving it more and more. I wash my face twice a day, and the night and morning routine is pretty similar. I may change it a little bit because of my monthly cycle coming in, and I tend to break out a little more around this time (FYI, in the future, I may do something related to your monthly cycle for all my ladies!). However, according to Curlogy, I should keep my routine fairly simple.

Here are a few products I recommend:

- Shea Moisture – I was surprised with this product, but their face wash is pretty effective. The only complaint I have is that it is very potent, so if you have sensitive skin, I do not recommend.

- CeraVe – This is a great line! They have some great products! I know that they work for a lot of people. However, my skin does not react to their products well. I think I am allergic to some kind of acid they have.

- Cetaphil – According to Curology, their face wash actually causes acne, but their moisturizer is recommended! I have it, and it feels amazing!

- Neutrogena – Neutrogena is my go-to with my face-wash! It goes well with my sensitive skin, and I especially like their foaming wash! Everyone’s face is unique, so maybe one of these products works with your face more than others, but feel free to explore!

- Differine Gel (Acne Treatment) – This stuff is a lifesaver! I use it so often, especially near my monthly cycle! I will say it is pretty expensive, but it is worth every penny!

Okay, this is getting long. Thank you for reading my routine! I hope this inspires you to take care of yourself! Like I said earlier, I hope to add a section focused on self-care someday. We will resume our section on relationships next week! I hope ya’ll have a great week! Remember, God is our refuge, and we are free to run to Him whenever we are in need.
